Misleading New Scott Walker Ad Features Choice School Teacher

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011
Contact: Graeme Zielinski, WisDems Communications Directior
414-364-1077graemez@wisdems.org

MADISON - Following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate in response to the new Scott Walker television ad featuring a teacher from a Kenosha choice school.
"In a television ad blast fueled by special interests that have applauded Scott Walker's assault on public education from the sidelines, a Republican activist and Walker supporter from a Kenosha choice school continues the misleading response to his recall.
Figures show that 90 percent of Wisconsin schools will see fewer staff and 40 percent of students will attend schools with bigger class sizes. Wisconsin’s excellent teachers and commitment to our public schools have historically kept us ahead of the curve on innovations in education, but where Wisconsin is now leading the nation is in cuts to education.
We're told by the Walker supporter in the ad that Scott Walker "is going to do what's right for Wisconsin," and that the person who will get her vote is the person "that says what they mean and means what they say."
But what Scott Walker has done is NOT what he said he would do. Never did Scott Walker run on the promise of stripping workers' rights and slashing $1.6 billion from education.
Scott Walker and his special-interest backers can spend as much as they want on a dishonest ad blitz featuring a parade of Walker apologists, but Wisconsinites are too smart to be fooled. Scott Walker lied to Wisconsin, but the numbers don’t: Scott Walker’s so-called “reforms” are not what's right for Wisconsin.”

Election Workers for 2012, Recall Info, Spring Candidates

Hello Members and Friends of the Winnebago County Democratic Party,

We have 3 important issues on the table right now.  Please review them below and take action as needed!

2012 Election Workers
By November 30, 2011 we need to submit all election workers for the municipalities in the Winnebago County.  With the new Voter ID law, it is important that we have good workers at the polls.  Election workers work all day on election day and help people vote.  Half of the workers are appointed from the rolls submitted by the Democratic party and half for the Republican party.

Please reply with your name, address and other contact info ASAP if you are even slightly interested in being an election worker.

Recall Info
The recall in on, the office is open!  Please get down there, sign a petition and grab a few to circulate among your family and friends.  We also have a rotating inventory of signs and bumper stickers encouraging the recall of Scott Walker.
Office location:
480 N. Main St, Oshkosh WI - Phone: 920.385.0495
Office hours:
Monday – Saturday: 9:00 A.M. to 9:00 P.M
Sundays: 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M.
Contact:
Nick Maines - nickm@wisdems.org

Spring Candidates
If we learned anything from this year, it is that who you have in an office matters.  Who makes political decisions effects all of us.  We want you in a local office.

We will be electing the entire Winnebago County Board, offices in city councils and town boards as well as many school board positions.  If you have ever thought it would be something you would like to do, this is the time.  If you know someone that wants to see progress for the people of your community, encourage them to run.

If you have questions about how to run for office go to our website: http://www.winnebagodems.org/p/elections.html for an overview of the process.  If you are interested after reading this, contact me ASAP.  Petitions to run for local office are due early January, 2012.

We are making history, thank you.

Citizens for a Strong Oshkosh Meeting Nov 28th

November 1, 2011

Dear Oshkosh neighbors and community leaders,

We hope you will join us…

Finding Common Ground:
Toward More Constructive Conversations
About Government, the Economy and Taxes

Monday, November 28th
6:30-8:00pm
150 N. Campbell Road, Oshkosh

The Oshkosh area, like all of Wisconsin and America, is at a crossroads. Having a civil and constructive conversation about funding public structures, services and schools becomes more and more important for our future but at the same time becomes more and more difficult; partly because the economy has not recovered as quickly as we all hoped, but also because the public debate has become increasingly polarized and personalized.

What can we do to improve the discussion? What do most Americans already agree on?

Patrick Bresette from Patrick Bresette from Public Works: the Dēmos Center for the Public Sector will share research about framing constructive conversations about otherwise difficult subjects such as government, taxes and the role of government in the economy.

Mr. Bresette has presented to political leaders, government officials, advocates and other community leaders throughout America. A more complete description of his background and presentation is attached.

We thank you again for all your efforts to make our community stronger. Please let us know as soon as possible if you can attend on November 28th. To RSVP or for more information, e-mail us at citizensstrongoshkosh@gmail.com.

Sincerely yours,

Citizens for a Strong Oshkosh

An Open Letter to Oshkosh School Staff from Oshkosh School Board Member Stephen Dedow

An Open Letter to Staff
Hello,

This afternoon I feel strongly compelled to write this mini-manifesto and to also, more importantly, say - thank you for all the work that you do.

I, as well as many others, fully realize the heavy burden that you all share. I wanted you to know that I think of you often throughout the course of my day and am proud that we have, what I feel, is a great working relationship between us. I truly wish the rest of this community could see the sacrifices that you make through the filter of my eyes.

I have lived in Oshkosh for 52 of my 56 years. During that time I have seen a very vocal minority of this community continue to use various tactics to blunt any type of progressive reform which would be beneficial to our families, friends and neighbors. These attacks are concentrated and have been effective along the entire local governing body front. County, City, School District, the Arts, Non-Profits, all have been affected over the years.  The “drama” created has driven many, many outstanding people out from what is actually an outstanding community within itself. In regards to the OASD…4 Business Managers, 3 Superintendents, and many other magnificent administrators and educators have left us within the past 8 years primarily because of the distorted priorities of a few.

The tools they use are typical: “one up-man ship,” “got-cha” manifesto’s at open board meetings, excessive information requests, and verbal assaults via public media, diversionary priorities, divisional topics, and factional fertilizer. The tools to rebuff these attacks, again in my opinion, are to ignore the divisionary, to dig in and defend the priority (children) and to check the credibility of the aggressor with overwhelming and undeniable information within the “Coliseum” itself ……the televised board meetings.

If we break now, “they” will succeed yet once again in stopping long overdue advances in which our children, your children, their children, my children, all the little kids in this community can advance through opportunity to a life of enrichment, which quite frankly they deserve. A legacy from one generation to the next if you will.

I understand that is probably not your “typical” BOE Member to Administration/Staff letter, and as I hem and haw about hitting the send button I am focused on one and only one thought…….we must stand our ground.

Respectfully, Stephen Dedow

WisDems Release New Ad 'Scott Walker: He's Not Working For Us'
Ad Highlights Scott Walker's Failure to Create Better Days for Working Families

MADISON – The Democratic Party of Wisconsin today launched a new ad in response to Scott Walker's misleading campaign advertisement in which he says, "Wisconsin's best days are yet to come." The reality is Scott Walker's "reforms" have created massive economic uncertainty for Wisconsin workers and families as 27,600 jobs have been lost in our state since Scott Walker signed his budget into law.

"Wisconsin workers have been getting handed pink slips every month since Scott Walker signed his budget in June," Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Friday. "Wisconsin's best days will only come after we recall Scott Walker and elect a governor that will fight for working, middle-class families."

The ad, entitled 'Scott Walker: He's Not Working For Us,' showcases how Scott Walker's "reforms" have rewarded his billionaire campaign donors while causing increased unemployment and job losses for Wisconsin workers. In addition to Scott Walker's dismal record on jobs, middle-class communities across Wisconsin are struggling with the effects of Scott Walker's decision to slash $1.6 billion from public education and $544 million from health care to pay for $2.8 billion in tax cuts for the super-rich and the out-of-state corporations that are sending our jobs overseas.

First Four Days: More Than 105,000 Walker Recall Signatures Collected

MADISON –Heather DuBois Bourenane, a volunteer with United Wisconsin from Sun Prairie, today announced that more than 105,000 signatures to recall Scott Walker have been collected in the first four days of the recall process.  The announcement was made at the Recall Walker Kick off Rally at the State Capitol hosted by We are Wisconsin.

“As of yesterday night—the fourth day of signature collection, more than 105,000 Wisconsin residents have already signed their name to a petition to recall Scott Walker. Across the state, people are talking with their friends, family and neighbors about Walker’s destruction and are doing all they can to end his days as Governor,” said DuBois Bourenane, a volunteer with United Wisconsin.

Official paperwork to recall Scott Walker was filed on Tuesday, November 15 with the Wisconsin Government Accountability Board.

United Wisconsin was created in the spring of 2011 and has over 200,000 pledges from Wisconsin residents to recall Walker. United Wisconsin is a Wisconsin State PAC, founded in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Russ Feingold fires up volunteers at the Majestic prior to the Recall Scott Walker Rally

MADISON – Former U.S. Senator Russ Feingold fired up hundreds of grassroots volunteers at the Majestic Theatre in Madison prior to the start of today's rally to recall Scott Walker. At the conclusion of Feingold's speech, he signed a petition to recall Scott Walker with representatives from United Wisconsin.

Watch the video here below.

Below are selected quotes from Russ Feingold's remarks to volunteers:

"You are on the frontline of taking back Wisconsin."

"Our law says you can be recalled if you attack the people of Wisconsin and that is exactly what this is all about."

"Our only choice is to remove this Governor and Lt. Governor. And we need to do it now."

"Thank you for your commitment. Where do I sign."

105,000 Petitions Signed in Four Days: This Is What Momentum Looks Like

By Kristian Anker-Møller
At 12.01am Tuesday night, the historic grassroots effort to recall governor Scott Walker began and within 48 hours 50,000 Wisconsinites had signed petitions to set the tone for today's massive rally at the State Capitol in Madison.
Recall Walker Rally
A huge turnout of volunteers at the Majestic witnessed the surprise appearance of former senator Russ Feingold who ended an energizing speech with the question, "Where can I sign?" From then on, people started milling into the Capitol Square, marching, chanting and singing their discontent with Scott Walker. At 1pm, speakers took to the stage at the steps in front of the Capitol, and true to the nature of the movement it was ordinary, hardworking Wisconsinites who spoke: a welder, a forklift driver, two students, a teacher. They told how Scott Walker and his GOP cronies' attack on workers' rights, education and healthcare are hurting families all over the state.

Toward the end of her speech, teacher Heather DuBois Bourenane's could announce two astonishing numbers: first, that more than 40,000 people had showed up to voice their frustration with Walker's power grabs. And second, that in just four days, more than 105,000 Wisconsinites had signed recall petitions, a number that does not include the thousands of petitions that were likely gathered at the rally.

40,000 people showing up at the rally and 105,000 petitions signed in just four days. This is how deeply felt the opposition to Scott Walker is, and this is how strong the movement to recall him is. And this is what momentum looks like.

In Their Own Words: School Districts Hurting from Scott Walker’s Budget “Tools”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
FRIDAY, Nov. 18, 2011
CONTACT: Graeme Zielinski, WisDems Communications Director
(414) 364-1077 GraemeZ@wisdems.org
MADISON – Mere months after Scott Walker and his Republican Party rammed through their drastic budget that slashed $1.6 billion from public education, school districts all over Wisconsin are reporting that the “tools” Walker gave them to manage the devastating cuts are not working.
Last week, the results of the Department of Public Instruction’s survey of Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators found, among other troubling facts, that four in 10 students attend a district with higher class sizes in elementary grades, while seven of 10 students attend a district with fewer teachers. On top of that, four of every 10 students saw cuts in core courses – science, mathematics, English, and social studies.
This unfair budget has real consequences for our children, as the responses to the survey from around the state reveal:
  • Horicon says, “We have made significant reductions in staff during the past three years and we can no longer compete with area districts.  We lose more than 100 students to open enrollment.”
  • Royall has been forced to close one school and has made cut to the foods program, and there are now fewer hours of science and math.
  • Shullsburg, already down to one administrator and one guidance counselor for the entire district, has received significant concessions from staff in an attempt to balance the budget. However, they still anticipate that, “next year we will be making significant staff cuts to attempt to balance the budget again.”
  • The news from Clayton is similarly somber: “No cuts were made in programs for the 2011-12 school year because there isn’t anything left to cut without causing a disruption in educational opportunities.” The district is “very concerned about what the future holds for small community schools.”
  • Other districts are getting by thanks only to President Obama’s federal funding. Germantown notes that, “federal stimulus money is supporting our staff,” while Bowler reports that, “Federal impact aid is a blessing to our school district.”
Even the districts that Scott Walker highlights as examples that his “tools” are working are in deep trouble. Waukesha, for instance, has seen record retirements, larger class sizes, reduced benefits and shorter planning periods for teachers and staff. What’s keeping the wheels from coming off is federal funding: Waukesha received more than $8 million in federal stimulus over the last few years, which offset Walker’s $5 million cut.
“The numbers don’t lie. Scott Walker’s radical cuts to public education are limiting educational opportunities for our children,” Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate said Friday. “But Walker’s cuts are more than numbers. These cuts have real consequences, as we are now hearing right from the district administrators who have to make the tough choices Scott Walker would not. Our schools are suffering today and these cuts will come back to haunt our state tomorrow.”

It's Not Working: Wisconsin Loses Another 9,700 Jobs More than 27,600 Wisconsin workers have lost their jobs since Scott Walker signed his budget

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
THURSDAY, Nov. 17, 2011
CONTACT: Graeme Zielinski, WisDems Communications Director
(414) 364-1077, graemez@wisdems.org

MADISON – Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Mike Tate released the following statement today on the jobs report that shows that Wisconsin lost another 9,700 jobs, including 3,400 good-paying manufacturing jobs in October:

"Wisconsin is now seeing the results of Scott Walker's so called "reforms." The numbers are in and they show that as Wisconsinites are preparing for Thanksgiving and the holidays, more workers are getting pink slips as a result of Scott Walker's failure to focus on job creation.

"Today's job numbers come on the same day that news reports revealed that Scott Walker's budget has a $3 billion deficit. Last year, Scott Walker promised to make the tough choices to balance our state's budget and create jobs. Instead of focusing on working together to do just that, he chose to divide and polarize our state by launching an assault on Wisconsin workers to give $2.8 billion in tax giveaways to the rich and to huge corporations that ship our jobs overseas.

"Scott Walker campaigned on the promise of creating jobs, but while the country has gained jobs, Wisconsin has lost jobs every month since he signed his anti-worker budget in June. Wisconsin workers and families can't afford Scott Walker as governor any longer. He must be recalled and replaced with a governor who takes job creation seriously."
